Encounter Level: 5
Background: As night falls, the town’s usually vibrant marketplace takes on an eerie stillness. By dawn, rumors spread that several townsfolk have gone missing, and strange animal sightings have been reported near the marketplace. A local animal tamer, Quinn Briarfell, known for her traveling menagerie, has lost control of her magical creatures after a recent acquisition went awry. One of her animals, a mischievous Quickling, has escaped and is wreaking havoc, setting other creatures loose in the town.
The Encounter:
Objective:
The party is hired by the town’s mayor, Garrick Stonebridge, to capture the escaped creatures and find the missing townsfolk. The creatures are enchanted, causing them to act erratically, and the Quickling, a small fey creature, is orchestrating their chaos for its own amusement.
- Investigating the Market: As the party investigates, they encounter loose animals including a Giant Weasel, Flying Snake, and a Pseudodragon. Each has been enchanted to be aggressive or mischievous, turning the normally peaceful creatures into troublesome foes. They are scattered around the marketplace, hiding in stalls, rooftops, and alleys.
- Quickling’s Tricks: The Quickling has set traps and illusions around the market to confuse and delay the party. Use spells like Minor Illusion, Silent Image, or even mundane traps to create challenges. The Quickling darts in and out of sight, taunting the party and luring them into ambushes by the enchanted creatures.
- Rescuing the Townsfolk: Several townsfolk are hiding from the chaos or have been cornered by the animals. The party needs to rescue them while dealing with the Quickling’s tricks. The Quickling may attempt to use a captured townsfolk as a bargaining chip or distraction.
Resolution Options:
- Capture: The party can try to capture the Quickling using nets, spells like Hold Person, or by setting traps of their own.
- Combat: If unable to capture, the party might have to defeat the Quickling and subdue the enchanted creatures.
- Dispelling the Enchantment: Using spells like Dispel Magic can calm the animals, making them easier to capture or guide back to the menagerie.
Outcome:
- If the Party Succeeds: The Quickling is captured or driven away, the enchanted creatures are safely returned, and the townsfolk are saved. The animal tamer rewards the party with gold, a unique pet, or a magical trinket, like a Feather Token.
- If the Party Fails: The chaos escalates, leading to more town damage and possibly injuries among the townsfolk. The mayor may insist on more drastic measures or blame the party, souring relations with the local authorities.
Future Hooks:
- The Quickling hints at a fey presence in the area, possibly leading to a larger fey-related plot or conflict.
- The escaped creatures may include rare or valuable magical beasts that attract the attention of poachers or collectors, providing future quests.
- The animal tamer’s acquisition, which caused the Quickling’s escape, could be part of a broader scheme involving cursed or dangerous magical items.
This encounter combines investigation, skill challenges, and combat in a dynamic town setting, providing a mixture of humor and danger that keeps players engaged while interacting with a lively environment.
