Encounter: Remembrance Day Ceremony

Description: As the adventurers arrive in the bustling town of Eldhaven, they notice the townsfolk preparing for a significant event. Banners adorned with the town’s crest flutter in the gentle breeze, and the smell of freshly baked goods fills the air. The townspeople gather in the central square, where a large statue of a valiant warrior stands, sword raised in eternal vigilance. Today, the town is celebrating Remembrance Day, a solemn holiday dedicated to honoring the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in past conflicts.

Event: The town’s mayor, an older dwarf named Thrain Ironbeard, addresses the crowd, telling tales of bravery and loss. As he speaks, an air of reverence settles over those assembled. The mayor invites the adventurers to join the ceremony, recognizing their own contributions to the town’s safety.

Challenge:

  • Honoring the Fallen: The adventurers are invited to share their own tales of valor or pay their respects at the monument. This can be a great role-playing moment, allowing each character to reflect on their experiences and losses.
  • Unexpected Disruption: Suddenly (during the tales from one of the adventurers), a spectral figure appears near the monument. It is the restless spirit of a soldier who fell in a forgotten battle. The spirit is not hostile but anguished, pleading for the recovery of their remains from a distant battlefield, so they may rest in peace.

Interaction:

The party can engage with the spirit through conversation, learning about the battle in which it fell and the location of its remains. This can be achieved with a successful DC 14 Charisma (Persuasion) or DC 12 Wisdom (Insight) check.

The adventurers may choose to embark on a quest to retrieve the remains and bring them back for a proper burial. Note: This is a good hook to bring the party along to a longer adventure.

Rewards:

  • Town Gratitude: If the adventurers assist the spirit, the town rewards them with a hero’s welcome. They receive a commemorative medal, granting them advantage on Charisma checks within Eldhaven.
  • Treasure: The spirit, once at peace, reveals the location of a hidden cache containing 200 gold pieces and a scroll of protection from evil and good.

Aftermath: Successfully helping the spirit allows the adventurers to feel a sense of fulfillment and respect from the townspeople (they will receive notoriety in the town and +1 to interactions with townsfolk). The Remembrance Day ceremony concludes with a feeling of unity and peace.
