Encounter: The Bog of Shadows

Description: As the party trudges through the murky waters of the swamp, the oppressive humidity weighs heavy on their shoulders. The croaking of bullfrogs and the buzz of insects provide a disconcerting symphony, while the twisted, gnarled trees cast eerie shadows that seem to dance in the dim light.

Event: Suddenly, the ground beneath the party’s feet gives way, and they find themselves sinking into a patch of quicksand. As they struggle to free themselves, they hear a sinister hissing sound from the nearby reeds. A pack of venomous swamp serpents slithers out, drawn by the commotion and hungering for prey.

Challenge:

Swamp Serpents (4): The serpents are adept at ambushing their prey in the murky waters, striking swiftly and retreating into the shadows.

  • HP: 18 each
  • AC: 14
  • Bite Attack: Melee +5, 1d6+3 piercing damage plus 1d4 poison damage (DC 12 Constitution save for half poison damage).

Terrain Features:

  • Quicksand Pit: The party must make a DC 12 Strength saving throw to escape the quicksand or risk sinking deeper and becoming restrained.
  • Fog Banks: Thick fog obscures visibility, granting advantage to creatures attempting to hide or ambush the party.

Aftermath: Defeating the swamp serpents allows the party to continue their journey through the treacherous swamp. Among the tangled roots and murky waters, they discover a hidden cache containing valuable alchemical ingredients or rare herbs. Additionally, they may uncover a partially submerged chest containing 56 gold coins and a magical trinket, lost by a previous unfortunate traveler.
